How gross becomes net in Germany
Social-security contributions come off first, split 50/50 between you and your employer. The employee share in 2026: pension 9.3 %, unemployment 1.3 %, health 7.3 % plus half of your fund’s supplementary rate, and long-term care depending on your number of children. Each applies only up to its contribution ceiling. After that, income tax (Lohnsteuer) is withheld. See also the tax classes guide.
FAQ
Who is this calculator for?
It estimates net pay for employees with statutory health insurance in tax class I (single, no child allowances in the payroll tax lookup). Social-security contributions are exact; the income tax (Lohnsteuer) is an approximation based on the annual tariff.
Why is the tax only an estimate?
Monthly payroll tax in Germany follows an official algorithm that depends on your tax class. This tool approximates the annual income tax under § 32a EStG and divides it over twelve months. For tax class I it is close to reality but does not replace an official payslip.
Which social contributions are deducted?
Pension 9.3 %, unemployment 1.3 %, health 7.3 % plus half of your fund’s supplementary rate, and long-term care (employee share, depending on number of children). Each applies only up to its contribution ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze).
